A Spellbinding Survey (Part 1)

We all know that I'm a huge fan of lists and surveys, so when I saw this one posted on Mel's blog, The Daily Prophecy, I knew I couldn't resist.

So how does it work? For each Harry Potter spell named, you list a book/movie that corresponds best to that spell. For example, Reparo is a repair spell so you pick a book that had tons of potential, that with some tweaking, could've been perfect.

Make sense? Okay, let's play! Feel free to join in and post links to your surveys in the comments below and be on the lookout for Part 2!

Reparo

fixes damaged objects
A book/movie that needs some serious fixing: Carnival of Souls by Melissa Marr. I'd say about 50% of the book worked for me. Had they cut all the human/witch stuff and just stuck to the demon world, it would've been perfect.

Lumos

creates a narrow beam of light
A book/movie that deserves more attention: Monstrous Beauty by Elizabeth Fama. I never thought I'd read a mermaid book but I did. And I liked it. A lot. Don't judge! Just give it a try. It's dark and beautiful and amazing.

Nox

counters the effects of Lumos
An overhyped book/movie: The Great Gatsby by Baz Luhrmann. Leo DiCaprio is NOT a good Gatsby. That's right, I said it. This movie is all about face value. While it mightlook good, when you dig a little deeper, you find very little substance.

Accio

summons an object from a significant distance
A book/movie you’re highly anticipating: Into The Still Blue by Veronica Rossi. I flew through Book #1 and Book #2 in the series and have been anxiously waiting to see if Aria and the gang actually make it to the Still Blue.

Alohomora

opens unlocked doors, unless bewitched
A book/movie you want to be more open about: Beautiful Bastard by Christina Lauren. I'm still trying to come to terms with the fact that I not only read read but really enjoyed erotic fan-fiction. Who knows? Maybe dinosaur erotica is next!

Expecto Patronum

conjures an incarnation of positive feelings
A book/movie that made you (nearly) cry: Another Earth by Mike Cahill. This is one of those deep movies that is so emotionally jarring, you'll definitely need to make sure you have a box of tissues nearby.

Morsmordre

conjures the Dark Mark
A dark book/movie you'd secretly mark as one of your favourites: The Purge by James DeMonaco. While I'm not sure I can mark this movie as a favourite (I still don't even know how to rate it!), I do like that it asks some seriously profound, if disturbing questions.

Petrificus Totalus

petrifies victim
A book/movie you wish to keep forever: The Dream Thieves by Maggie Stiefvater. In Henrietta, magic is real and I want to go there.

Protego

shield charm
An intimidating book/movie you keep putting off: The Fault In Our Stars by John Green. You guys, I just don't think I can handle all THE FEELS. Nothing scares me quite like a "crying" book. Except maybe clowns.

Riddikulus

used against a boggart
A book/movie with a deceiving synopsis: A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin. Though I'd already seen the show by the time I read the book, it didn't quite prepare me for what was to come. And I don't think ANY synopsis can do this book justice.

Lacarnum Inflamarae

shoots fireballs
A book/movie you wish to burn out of your mind completely: Gangster Squad by Ruben Fleischer. Not even Ryan Gosling can redeem this movie. Seriously. Just don't.

Wingardium Leviosa

levitates objects
A book/movie you wish to revisit: Divergent & Insurgent by Veronica Roth. I wasn't the biggest fan of these books the first time around and I blame my Hunger Games hangover for that. But now that I've had some distance from it coupled with the fact that the final installment was just published, I'd really like to give them another go.

Avada Kedavra

causes instant death
Worst book/movie EVER: Confessions of a Shopaholic by Sophie Kinsella. To be honest, I hated both the book AND movie version. The MC is a shallow, materialistic ditz and after all she goes through, she doesn't learn ANYTHING from it. There is NO change in her behavior, like, at all. She gives women a bad name.

Survey originated from Jasmine at Flip That Page.

  1. Confessions of a Shopaholic is a terrible film, I definitely agree. The books were one of my favourite series but the film is just... ridiculous.

    1. It was and it's a shame because I really like Isla Fisher as an actress. It was just frustrating to watch her character go through SO much and then in the end, she doesn't change. What's the point? I felt like I wasted my time.

  2. Ahhh, this is so fun! I totally agree about The Dream Thieves - that book, man... THAT BOOK!! So amazing. I do hope you work up the courage to read The Fault in Our Stars, though. It's definitely full of feels, but it's also really beautiful. :)

    1. I KNOW! I didn't think it was possible for The Dream Thieves to be better than The Raven Boys, BUT IT WAS! And yeah, I really need to get over this feels fear because I've heard such wonderful things about TFiOS.

  3. I resisted The fault in our stars for a long time, but it's very good :)! A game of thrones is epic. I want to read Monstrous beauty! Fun, thanks for sharing :D

  4. What a fun survey! I need to watch The Purge and I don't know why I haven't read The Fault In Our Stars yet. I also keep eye balling the Veronica Roth books. I want to get them, then I change my mind, then I look at them some more...etc...etc...

    1. Just make sure you're prepared for The Purge... I'd say you'll probably fare better watching it at home versus in the theater. It's other people's reactions that really pushed it over the edge. As for the Veronica Roth books... they're good, my preference just lies with The Hunger Games, that's all.

  5. I too did NOT like the Confessions of a Shopaholic movie or book, I don't even think I finished the book. I also keep putting off The Fault in Our Stars. Sigh.

This is such a fun survey!

    1. Thanks, Kay! Yeah, Confessions just wasn't my cup of tea, that's all. And I feel bad about not reading TFiOS but I just can't bring myself to do it.

  7. What a great post, Nikki! And I say that as someone who has someone who has not yet read HP (I've bought them, and I hope that counts a bit!), so that's saying something. :)

I'd like to shoot a fireball at Hopeless, Ten Tiny Breaths, and any other book that glorifies stalking. (LOL - I almost wrote "glorifies shopping" due to the comments above.) A book with a deceiving synopsis is Doon by Carey Corp and Lorie Langdon. It was presented as a light fantasy, but it had all of the worst characteristics of NA.

I've been wanting to see The Purge, even though the reviews aren't all that great.

    1. Thanks so much, Stephanie! I won't hold the HP thing against you... too much. Haha! And yeah, I TOTALLY agree with you on the whole stalking thing. It's creepy and not a good precedence to set! I curse deceptive synopsis, particularly, when I end up disappointed by them. It's such a drag!

I thought The Purge was definitely disturbing but still very well done. I guess the creep factor there had more to do with the audience's reactions to what was happening on screen more than anything. It's one of those movies that poses so very interesting questions and revelations about the human condition though, if you're in to that sort of thing.

      Thanks for stopping by, Stephanie!
