Top Ten Settings I'm Craving

Top Ten Tuesday is an original weekly feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Combining both a passion for all things bookish with an obsessive love of list-making, this rad meme was born. This week’s topic is Top Ten Settings You'd Like To See More Of (Or At All).

Hmm, this is an interesting chance to get really crazy, er, creative but I'll spare you all and stick with somewhat reasonable choices (many of which come from TV shows). Or maybe not. I guess you'll just have to read on and find out.

Andalucia, Spain - I was fortunate enough to live in Spain for a semester abroad and IT CHANGED MY WHOLE LIFE. With the mid-day siestas, the brilliant beaches and the "no pasa nada" (don't worry about it) mentality, their lifestyle is totally intoxicating. I would give anything to go back there again, even if it's only via my imagination.

Outer Space - I think this one would be a challenge, but if done right, it has the potential to be SO FREAKING EPIC. Here are some prime examples of space winners: The Hitchhiker's Guide To The GalaxyStar Wars, Spaceballs... So someone, please, write me a space book. K, thanks.

Ancient Greece - Ever since I took Greek Mythology and Greek History (purely for fun) in college, I've been stuck on Ancient Greece. Does it get any better than Homer's classics, The Iliad & The Odyssey? I don't think so, but it doesn't hurt to try either. Give me more, please!

The Amazon - It's exotic, mysterious and has the potential to be really, really creepy. If you ever watched the TV show, The River, then you know exactly what I'm talking about!

Tuscany, Italy - I've never been but I imagine it as this incredibly romantic place full of lush vineyards, sumptuous food and delicious wines. You know, the prime ingredients for super swoony times.

The Island - Wouldn't it be cool to live on an island that has smoke monsters, polar bears AND old nuclear bunkers?! No? What if I told you they played a lot of Geronimo Jackson? Okay, maybe I'm just using this as an excuse to semi-revive the series, Lost, because I need more answers. So sue me!

Narnia -  Talking lions, goat boys, magnificent ice castles AND turkish delight. I mean, pssh! Who WOULDN'T wanna go there? Besides, I've always wanted more elaboration on the merits of wardrobe travel.

Villainous Lairs - I mean, seriously. Since the days of Sean Connery's, James Bond, we haven't seen much of the villainous lair, so yeah. This has the potential to be very interesting and certainly dastardly, at best.

Never Neverland - Pirates, Indians, Lost Boys, Fairies and Mermaids. This leaves the storybook world open to so many different genres, so count me in!

Time Travel - Okay Doc, so technically this one is cheating but I'm counting it anyway because it allows for a multitude of great places and times for a story to take place.

What settings would you like to see more of? Are there any settings you're sick of? And if you could travel anywhere, where would it be?

  1. Great list! I like the villainous lairs and the Amazon (though at first I thought you meant the website, haha). Now following you via GFC. Love the name of your blog, btw. :D

  2. Thanks Liesel! Hmmm... now I think you're on to something. A rousing story about love that takes place between a well-to-do manager and an unsuspecting loader at Amazon's storage facility. I like it!

    1. Okay, so we need to chat about Lost when you've watched the entire thing. I say it was the greatest show EVER up through Season 3... after that... errrrrm. Again, we'll chat more when you're all caught up.

  6. Hooray for time travel as a setting. When done right. Cos when it goes wrong, it can go oh-so-wrong.

  7. Time Travel is not cheating (not just because I said it too!) - it's got SO much potential. And space, and tropical islands!

  9. First off, Spain must have been amazing! And *sigh* about the Outer Space setting. I'm a sci-fi geek at heart and I just love a good space setting. I used to read Star Trek Voyager books many moons ago, that was my fav Star Trek. That and Enterprise.
Yes to Tuscany, Italy. Have you seen Under the Tuscan Sun? That's on my top 10 fav romance films. It's a book too, but I haven't read it yet.
Don't get me started on LOST. I actually watch re-runs on cable now that they have them available. I *heart* Jack all the way. IMO the smoke monster explanation was whack.
I've always enjoyed a nice Venice setting, something about those gondolas that just sweeps me away. I also like Old New York settings, circa Rockefeller/Carnegie era.
    Great post!

    1. Spain will always have a special place in my heart, Naida. I think I'll have a hard time going back because I just don't know if it can live up to my memories. ::Le Sigh:

Under the Tuscan Sun is a negatory, though, I've heard beautiful things. I will watch it ASAP just because I trust your opinion.

LOST! I'm still not over it. I honestly don't know if I ever will be, though.

Ooooh, old school NYC is great! You should try reading The Diviniers because it has that classic, jazzy NYC sorta feel. So good!

  10. I agree with the bookworm about Under the Tuscan Sun. What a great book.

It's not ancient Greece...or even Greece really, for that matter...but you should check out Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson series. There's a couple off-shoots from it, but you should start with Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief. Lots of mythology mixed into modern times. Great stuff.

Here's my TTT for the week. Happy reading!

    1. Okay, so that's two people who now recommend Under the Tuscan Sun. Consider it a done deal, ladies!

Ya know, I saw the movie and wasn't that impressed but I don't usually put much stock in movie incarnations of books. I actually bought my brother the first few books in the series for Christmas, so I'll definitely have to borrow them when he's done.

  11. Villainous Lairs! Hahah, that made me chuckle :P

Also Ancient Greece! Ah! Alexander the Great! Grabby hands. Ancient Greece is the shizzle isn't it? (I can't believe I just said that). I also have a thing for Ancient Egypt myself - there's just something so mystic about the both of them. And also the fact that there was a great wealth of knowledge being discovered then. Must've been exciting times to be living in. And perhaps a little terrifying.

NEVERLAND!! Ahh, I use to wish so hard that I could fly off to there and never have to grow up and deal with all the boring stuff I'm dealing with now. Seriously that story has my heart. I love everything about it, but of course there's that darkness and everything underneath. Despite that I still want to be there. My sister and I use to place dried leaves by our windowsill and then next morning act all astonished and pretend that Peter Pan had been there. So sad.

  12. YES YES YES to outer space. Ever since reading the Across the Universe books, I want more. Authors can go in so many directions, plotwise and, well, space-wise, with that particular setting. I SUPPORT THIS.
