Top Ten Tearjerkers

Top Ten Tuesday is an original weekly feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Combining both a passion for all things bookish with an obsessive love of list-making, this rad meme was born. This week's topic is the Top Ten Books That Make You Cry. I have an aversion to tears so I perpetually avoid "crying" books/movies. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy "the feels," all except the weepy kind. As a result, this blog is generally a cry-free zone.

I think my avoidance has something to do with my need for control. Basically, I can't maintain that control if I'm a blubbering mess. But you know what? Sometimes a book/movie will catch me by surprise, strike a chord so hard that the tears start to flow. Funny, how sometimes a little lack of control is just what the doctor ordered. So here are my top ten tearjerkers. Make sure you keep some tissues handy!

So tell me, do you avoid tearjerkers or are you a glutton for punishment? What books/movies have made you cry? Sometimes I feel like I'm really missing out on great books/movies because I fear the tear(s)!

  1. Wow, you definitely picked most of my tear jerkers! Tiger Lily, UP, The notebook, Big fish, Harry Potter.. I don't cry easily when it comes to movies/books, but these are all so emotional and touching!

    1. Same here! It's weird things that make me cry like horrific things happening to old people, same with animals.

  2. I cried while watching Up, like full blow snot infused crying. The ending of The Notebook always gets too me too, and I won't even start with HP, especially when a certain house elf passes. Great list! I too don't like to cry, but darn it, sometimes it is worth it.

Awwwww. I did not think about Harry Potter when I wrote my list, despite the fact that I watched part of the HP marathon on TV last week and -- yes -- tears a-plenty. It's so embarrassing when I go to a movie and don't really it's going to be a tearjerker. I went to Les Miz with no tissues in my pockets, and by the time I left, I was just a big, soggy mess. I like the sad stuff at times, but I guess I need to be prepared!

    1. Exactly. I really hate it when I'm unprepared. I was an inconsolable mess when I watched The Notebook and it really freaked out the hubby.

  4. I lost it during the beginning of Up. Oh, my god, the sads! Harry Potter as a whole made my list - so many tearjerker moments in that series!

    1. Yeah, I really had a hard time picking just one book in the HP series (same with THG, too!) because there are so many heartbreakingly sad moments. And the beginning of Up definitely gets me EVERY SINGLE TIME.

  5. I like that you did books and movies; that's what I should have done. Up is definitely too sad for a children's movie! Though I'm sure it doesn't mean as much to them as adults, but still, ack!

    1. Yeah, I avoid tearjerkers so I sort of had to include movies. I feel like I'm missing out a little on some good books (i.e. - The Fault in Our Stars & The Book Thief) because I avoid them so adamantly, but I just can't bring myself to do it.

  6. I know, There's no crying in baseball and all that but I like it when a book or movie makes me cry. I liked the film Big Fish and I'll have to look up A Dog's Purpose and Tiger Lily. Ah, the Notebook. It's that darn Nicholas Sparks fault and his heart wrenching stories. Did you watch/read Nights in Rodanthe and Message in a Bottle? ohmergod, tear jerkers.

Books that made me cry are The Road by McCarthy, The Lovely Bones by Sebold and IT by King had me tearing up over the friendships formed. Also, the entire Harry Potter series, both films and books. When Dobby died in the book, I balled. I recently read a book called Dog Years that had me crying too.

Movies, Steel Magnolias I think is the worse one, I cry so hard I get a headache during the funeral scene when Sally Fields character has her moment, omg, she's awesome in that one. Also The Green Mile, Awakenings (sooooo good!) and Million Dollar Baby.
    Great post!

    1. See, I don't like crying (I'm a wuss, what can I say) so books/movies that I KNOW are going to pull out some tears, I tend to avoid. And yeah, I do feel like I'm missing out on some good stuff because of that. I guess I have to be in the right frame of mind/mood before I can go into something that heavy.

You DEFINITELY need to read A Dog's Purpose, it's so touching but also so sad. Same with Tiger Lily, such a beautiful story. And The Notebook, ah. I haven't read the book (nor do I ever intend to) but my mum suggested that I watch the movie, so I did. I was so inconsolable by the end of it that my hubby got scared and called my mum to find out what to do. I was WRECKED. I don't think I've ever cried that hard during a book/movie experience.

Oh yeah! The Green Mile was definitely another one that had the tears flowing. Haven't seen Million Dollar Baby or any other Nicholas Sparks films. I've learned after my experience with The Notebook to avoid his books/movies at all costs. I just can't handle it.

  7. Oh my god my friend and I watched The Notebook on DVD together having no clue what it was about (I don't know how, because it was a while after it came out, but we had no clue it would be so sad). I don't think, with the exception of funerals, maybe, that I've ever cried so hard in my life (I'm not generally a crier). I've never watched the movie again because I can't live through that another time!

    1. No, I was totally in the same boat when I first saw The Notebook! I had NO clue what it was about. And I regretted it.

  8. Ah, Where the Red Fern Grows...the first book I ever cried over. I had to read this is FIFTH grade. Nothing is worse than animal death, in my opinion...when an animal dies, cue the waterworks!

  9. I need to check out Tiger Lily, I have heard good things! My list struggled ... I do not read a lot of sad books or books that make my cry! The Notebook was a good pick though!
