The Books Are Headed To Hollywood!

Top Ten Tuesday is an original weekly feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Combining both a passion for all things bookish with an obsessive love of list-making, this rad meme was born. This week's post is Top Ten Books I'd Love To See As A Movie/TV Show.

Being that this is a book AND movie review blog, I'm always looking for the cinematic potential in my reading crusades. While there are some books formatted better for the big screen, others have that slow burn, more suited for TV. Here are some of the ones I'm hoping will make the leap from page to screen.

The Lost City of Z: A Tale of Deadly Obsession in the Amazon by David Grann - This book is based on the actual expeditions of explorer, Percey Fawcett, and his deadly obsession with finding the Lost City of Z. I think this would make a fantastic TV show and, funny enough, I hear this is going to actually happen. Bonus: Benedict Cumberbatch is on board! Where do I sign up?

Shadow and Bone & Siege and Storm by Leigh Bardugo - Three words: The Darkling. Sturmhond. Need I say more?

Under The Never Sky & Through The Ever Night by Veronica Rossi - I know YA has become a wildly popular genre to adapt to the big screen, but I really do think these books have great sci-fi potential. It would be fun to see all the virtual technology from the domes contrasted against the stark environment of the outside world.

Will Grayson, Will Grayson by David Levithan/John Green - Actually, I'd rather see this book play out on the stage because that's exactly where Tiny Cooper belongs!

Carnival of Souls by Melissa Marr - I wasn't super crazy about this book but I do think the paranormal elements and battles would be fun to watch in a movie theatre.

Midnight by Dean Koontz - I'll be honest. I really didn't like this book BUT that's because I wasn't a big fan of Koontz's writing style. I do think with the right SFX it would make for a super creepy TV show.

The Hunt For Atlantis by Andy McDermott - One of the reasons I loved this book so much was because it read very cinematically. So there ya go. Let's make it happen, people!

Plague of the Dead: The Morning Star Strain by Z.A. Recht - This is probably my favourite zombie series and I think with the successes of The Walking Dead, this one would do well on TV. Higher action always sells!

Terminal Freeze by Lincoln Child - This book was very reminiscent of John Carpenter's The Thing, so I think it has the potential to be a great creature feature!

The Bride Collector by Ted Dekker - I don't know how he does it, but Dekker has written some of the scariest villains I've ever read. Like, truly creepy. This would work well as a movie OR a TV show for those who are into crime/drama/thrillers.

What books would you like to see as movies/TV shows? Have you read any of these picks? If so, do you think they'd work well? What are some of your favourite book-to-film adaptations? Why do you think they were successful (or not)?

  2. Great list Nikki! I forgot Dean Koontz in mine. I did mostly recent reads. I like Ted Dekkers work too. The Z.A. Recht zombie series looks like it would translate well on screen!

    1. I would have chosen some more recent books but it seems like they're already adapting most of them for the big screen anyway. At least a lot of the more popular ones. I figured I'd give some of those older books some lovin' this time around.

Ted Dekker writes some of the creepiest antagonists I've ever read and I think given the right director, his work would make for some AMAZING movies/shows. And hopefully they wouldn't make Recht's books an on-screen atrocity like they did with World War Z.

  3. OMG, what I wouldn't give to see Will Grayson, Will Grayson the musical. I approve this idea wholeheartedly.

With what's been going on with the YA adaptations, I sort of how Shadow & Bone doesn't get made, because what if it's horrid. *cowers in fear*

    1. YES! Let's make this happen!

I know, I share the same fears that you do, Christina. But think of the possibilities! If it turns out good ::crosses fingers::, just imagine HOW good it'll be. Plus I like playing the casting game with The Darkling and Sturmhond in my head. ;)

  4. YES! I would LOVE for Under the Never Sky and Through the Ever Night to become movies or even a tv series, the casting would have to be just right.

    1. I agree, Ashley! Man, a TV series would be good too but they'd have to be careful not to drag it out too long.

    1. I thought so. I wasn't so keen on the bookish version but I think with the atmosphere and concept, it would make for a cool movie.
