The Land Of The Lost

Top Ten Tuesday is an original weekly feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Combining both a passion for all things bookish with an obsessive love of list-making, this rad meme was born. This week's post is Top Ten Books I Bought But Haven't Read.

Dear Beloved Books: I've done wrong and I owe you an apology. Look, I know there are no excuses for why you've been gathering dust on the bookshelf. You have understand, I purchased you with every intention of cracking your spine and getting immersed in your pages. You crave my touch. You deserve to be read and... OMG! SHINY NEW THINGS!

Wait, what was I talking about again? Oh, right. My precious, special books. I really am sorry I promise, you're not forgotten.

The Alchemyst: The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel by Michael Scott - This is a fairly established YA series much in the vain of Harry Potter. I've had this on my Nook since I got it and just haven't gotten around to it yet. Soon! I swear!

Interview With the Vampire by Anne Rice - I loved the movie so I have no doubt I'm going to love the book... if I ever get around to reading it. Dammit.

Zombie Survival Guide: Complete Protection from the Living Dead by Max Brooks - If, er, when the dead start walking, I'm really going to kick myself for not having read this. To be fair, I've skimmed it... kinda.

Fire Burn and Cauldron Bubble by H.P. Mallory - I bought this for my Nook after hearing that it was like Jennifer Harlow's F.R.E.A.K. series (which I adored). And several months later, it's still there, unread.

Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia - I really wanted to wait until I saw the movie before I read the book. After enjoying the theatrical version I'm hoping the book will shed some light on some of the less clear plot points.

The Map of Time by Felix Palma - I can't even tell you how long I've had this book and how many lists this one has been on. Seriously, dudes? What is my problem? It sounds AMAZING! No excuses. I will read it before the end of the year.

Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen - Though I wasn't impressed much by the film, I am impressed by the fact that Gruen initially wrote this story during NaNoWriMo. If only I could muster up the energy to actually pick it up!

Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë - It's a classic. And I suck because I've never read it. I know.

The Complete Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle - I've read a number of short stories and one novel involving our famous detective and his awesome side-kick. Now that I have a swanky, decorative version, it should make reading the rest a whole lot more fun.

The Lover's Dictionary by David Levithan - I heart Levithan's work and this book is on my catch-up reading challenge so I resolve to read it, STAT.

Okay, friends, no more excuses. It's time to anty up and read the books that have been resigned to collecting dust on our shelves. What do you say? Are you with me? Which neglected books make your list?

  1. Ohhhh I loved Water For Elephants -- it's very well done.

ALSO! I was almost going to put The Lover's Dictionary on my list but changed my mind at the very last minute.

    1. I'm somewhat ashamed by the fact that it's been sitting all pretty on my coffee table for quite some time now. Ooops.

  2. Beautiful Creatures is on my list, too. I bought it when all the previews for the movie came out. As such, I have yet to read it and still have not seen the movie.

  3. I'm interested in what you think of the movie if/when you see it. It'll definitely be interesting to compare it to the book, for sure. Thanks for stopping by, Nikki! And great name! ;)

  4. I have a few of these books on my shelf too that I just HAD to buy.

Great list and I think you should start with The Alchemist or Interview with a Vampire. I LOVED those books.

    1. The movie version of Interview with a Vampire was amazing so I can only imagine the book will be that much better. As for The Alchemyst, my brother loved it and I've been wanting to check out the series for awhile now. I guess I just need to stop making excused and DO IT! :)

  5. (Hello fellow Nikki! lol)

I'm a huge Sherlock Holmes fan, so of course I have to recommend the complete collection. So good.

And I hadn't even heard of The Map of Time, what is wrong with me?! It sounds AWESOME. Adding it to my TBR list for sure!

Nikki @ There were books involved...

    1. Heya doppelganger, thanks for stopping by! I know! Sherlock Holmes is amazing and I have a gorgeous special edition just sitting there, looking pretty, on my bookshelf. I totally need to carve out some time for this one.

And yeah. I saw The Map of Time in a bookstore in the airport and immediately bought it because the cover was GORGEOUS and the premise sounded amazeballs. Over a year later, it's still sitting on the self, untouched. What is wrong with me?!

  6. LOL, I put The Map of Time on my TBR list after seeing it in a bookstore and falling in love with the cover too! Still haven't gotten a copy, though. For both Interview With The Vampire and Water for Elephants, I'd say the books far surpass the movies! What a terrific list. Enjoy... and good luck!

    1. So it seems, we share the same bookish tendencies, Lisa! Knowing that the books are better than the films, it definitely makes me excited to read them! Thanks so much!

  7. Great list Nikki. Two of my fav books are on there, Wuthering Heights and Interview. I've been wanting to read Water for Elephants. Gosh, I have too many unread bought books on my shelves. At the top of my list are The Alchemist, The Count of Monte Cristo, Frankenstein, Under the Dome and The Shadow of the Wind. I dust my shelves with a swiffer duster though, so its not too bad...lol...but the pages of the Count of Monte Cristo are turning yellow ...that's how long I've had that one.

    1. Frankenstein is soooo good, but then again, I'm quite partial to the darker gothic stuff. I haven't read the Count of Monte Criso but the movie was pretty amazing. Perhaps it's time to dust that one off and take a gander?

  8. Brontë!! ASAP!! :-) You cannot go wrong, and its one of those books that I think makes you a more culturally literate person, since so many other movies/novels riff on it.

    1. I know! I really need to read some of Austen's work too but I think I'm a little fearful that it'll go way over my head (or I'll get murdered by Austen fans because I won't end up liking it). Gah! I suck sometimes!

  9. I'm right there with you with The Alchemyst. My sister in law LOVED the series and I still haven't read it! Bah!
