Top Ten “Oldies” But Goodies

Top Ten Tuesday is an original weekly feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Combining both a passion for all things bookish with an obsessive love of list-making, this rad meme was born. This week’s topic is the Top Ten "Older" Books You Don't Want People To Forget About (listed in no particular order).

Since I started this blog my TBR list has grown exponentially, so much so in fact, that many potentially great reads are shelved to make room for the newer releases. While I love getting recommendations from fellow bloggers I am trying to make a more conscious effort to dedicate quality time to my forgotten pile. I hope you all will join me and do the same! To get you started, here are some wonderful books (some older, some newer) you should definitely clear the time and the shelves for:

Married With Zombies by Jesse Petersen – If scares and zombies aren’t your thing, that’s okay, this book is the perfect introductory to both. The first in a series, it screams with LOL moments and tons of cinematic action. Trust me, our feisty narrator Sarah won’t allow you to regret a thing.

And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie – Mayhem, murder and mystery all in one deliciously suspenseful novel. What more could you ask for from the queen of drama and intrigue? It’s also notable to watch the classic 1945 film adaptation

American Gods by Neil Gaiman – I read this on the recommendation of a very good friend and was completely blown away. Lovers of fantasy, mythology and epic battles will really enjoy this one.

The Hunt For Atlantis by Andy McDermott – Do you love buried treasure? What about blazing action and multiple explosions? If treasure hunts and/or Michael Bay are your thing then you’ll fall in love with the Wilde/Chase series.

Lord of the Flies by William Golding – Pre-Hunger Games, this is one of the original dystopian books out there. It’s not for the faint of heart but if you want to delve into a rousing debate regarding human nature, this is the book for you.

A Dog's Purpose by W. Bruce Cameron – Animal lovers, unite! This book chronicles the journey of one dog through many lives. It will make you smile, laugh and cry (so make sure you have a box of tissues handy)!

Dracula by Bram Stoker – This one is a total classic and one of my absolute horror favs! If you want to know what the original vampire looks like (no sparkly vamps here!), then it’s a must-read. Just in time for Halloween too!

The Princess Bride by William Goldman – If you haven’t read this one yet then shame on you! Seriously. Stop reading my blog right now and re-watch the movie. And if the movie isn’t reason enough to read it, check out my glowing review instead.

The Second Assistant: A Tale from the Bottom of the Hollywood Ladder by Clare Naylor & Mimi Hare – I’m not big on chick lit but every once in awhile I come across a really entertaining book in the genre. This is one of those books. Wanna learn about Hollywood life without the hazards of back-stabbing, fake tans and phony friendships? You can! Read this book!

Barefoot in the Park by Neil Simon – Okay, so technically this one is a play but it still counts, right? We step into the lives of two newlyweds who come across a spot of bad luck. Are they strong enough to make it work or are they just too different? If you’re looking for a quirky little love story, this comedy is sure to hit the spot. And don’t forget to check out the 1967 film with Jane Fonda and Robert Redford while you’re at it!

So there you have it. Have you read any these already? What did you think? And which forgotten books top your list?

  2. I agree about American Gods. My boyfriend and I listened to the audio version on a cartrip and LOVED it. I think it helps that a Brit narrated it :-)

  4. Those are some good ones. I used to read Agatha Christie nonstop, at one point I'd go to the library every two weeks just to keep checking out her books. I agree, Dracula is a good one and Princess Bride is so much fun.
I'd have to add The Lord of The Rings to the list. Those are among my fav classics, and the books got so much attention when the genius who is Peter Jackson produced the films.

    1. Ya know, I tried reading The Hobbit when I was younger and just had a very hard time with it. I really do need to try reading all of Tolkein's books again now that I have the attention span of an actual adult.

  5. Wow, so many great choices! I didn't participate this week because I didn't have time, but I love reading you list. The Princess Bride is such a classic! As well as Dracula, Lord of the Flies, and Neil Gaimon! Great choices. I am such a dog lover, that I'm afraid to read any of those "dog" books out there. Dogs + crying = a big "no" for me. LOL!
